FEBRUARY 2023
Sweden’s second-largest metropolis offers unparalleled sunbathing and swimming, world-class art, and unforgettable culinary experiences – all within a short day trip. Here’s our pick of the best destinations around Gothenburg.
Fine art and swimming in Tjörn
The island of Tjörn is a charming seaside resort area that attracts hordes of sun worshipers every summer as well as art connoisseurs from far and wide. It’s easy to get here by car from Strömsund via Tjörnbron, and the island offers a variety of accommodations ranging from inexpensive hostels to high-end boutique hotels.
A creative hub
Nordiska Akvarellmuseet
Located right on the water just outside the picturesque village of Skärhamn is the Nordic Watercolor Museum, an inspiring institution where art and nature join forces. Since it opened its doors in 2000, the museum has featured world-class art from renowned international names such as Salvador Dali, Louise Bourgeois, René Magritte, and Bill Viola as well as famous local Swedish artists including Lars Lerin, Anders Zorn, Elsa Beskow, and many more.
Nature’s art gallery
Skulptur i Pilane
Tucked into the confines of an eight-hectare landscape, amid grazing sheep and ancient, prehistoric monuments and artifacts, lies the Pilane sculpture park. Surrounded by a stunning view of the Bohuslän archipelago, roam to your heart’s content among the sculptural masterpieces, including the over 40-foot high Anna by Jaume Plensa.
True seaside charm
Klädesholmen
Are you longing for rest and relaxation by the sea? If so, pack your bathing suit and make a beeline for Klädesholmen. Here you’ll find a charming cluster of quaint villas whose colorful facades are draped with fragrant Hollyhocks. Learn about the island’s traditional herring fishery at Sillebua, the herring museum, swim and sunbathe on one of the captivating beaches, or just kick back and enjoy a drink on the pier.
Fantastic food in Falkenberg
Make sure you visit the idyllic seaside town of Falkenberg, where you’ll find some of the best restaurants and spas in Sweden.
The Hamptons of Southern Sweden
Falkenberg Strandbad
For those seeking a taste of the high life, the so-called Hamptons of Southern Sweden is just the ticket. Relaxation, rejuvenating spa treatments, exquisite food and drink, an incredible atmosphere – you’ll find it all here! At the Falkenberg Strandbad resort, it’s easy to forget you’re in Scandinavia and not at a luxurious resort somewhere on the Mediterranean.
A food paradise in the countryside
Skrea Matbruk
Hungry foodies make the pilgrimage throughout the year to Skrea, a picturesque food Mecca on the outskirts of Falkenberg, to experience the heavenly local delicacies made from fresh, seasonal ingredients. The handmade pasta at Skrea Matbruk is absolutely to die for, while no visit to the countryside is complete without a visit to the small Skrea Ost dairy, where you can pour your own bottle of fresh milk and choose from a novel assortment of pungent cheeses and creamy yogurts.
Pizza perfection
Lilla Napoli
Nowadays, you don’t need to travel to Naples to enjoy the perfect pizza. You can simply make a quick trip to the conspicuously small, white container-like building on Halmstadvägen Road in Falkenberg just an hour and a half south of Gothenburg. Here, at the Lilla Napoli restaurant, you’ll find divine fresh-baked pizzas made from a fluffy, crunchy dough, organic San Marzano tomatoes, and fresh Mozzarella cheese. Buon appetito!
Only in Borås
While in recent months, the Swedish textile capital of Borås has gone viral under the hashtag #BIB (Swedish for “Only in Borås”) on TikTok, this isn’t the only reason to visit the city.
The best from the world of film
Borås Bio Röda Kvarn
The art house cinema Röda Kvarn, which was built in 1914, is one of the oldest and most well-preserved movie theaters in Sweden. Here you can see renowned Swedish and international movies – both new releases as well as time-honored cult classics.
An urban art scene
Borås street art
A publicly supported art scene is an important part of Borås’s identity. At Magasingatan 8, you’ll find an over 300-foot-long wall where you’re free to unleash your inner Picasso. Curious to discover what else western Sweden has to offer when it comes to street art? Just download the app WSSAT.
A world of fashion
Textilmuseet
With its history as a textile center, it’s not surprising that Borås has one of the leading museums for fashion and haute couture in the Nordic region: the Textile Museum of Sweden. In the award-winning flagship exhibition, Textil kraft [Textile power], you can learn all about clothing manufacturing while rotating exhibitions deal with topics like fashion, design, handiwork, technology, and sustainability.
MAY 2023
Sweden’s second largest city has so much more to offer than Liseberg amusement park and salty archipelago tours. We list the hotels, restaurants, and sights for a perfect weekend in Gothenburg.
Friday
Check in
What better way to kick off a weekend break than checking into a great hotel? Central Gothenburg has many good options to offer, and the exclusive Hotel Pigalle is a favorite. To step into the historic 18th century Palace building is to step inside a world of opulent luxury and extravagance, while the city buzz continues outside. Enjoy a cocktail or two in the roof bar (lavishly furnished, like the rest of the hotel) before heading out to explore the city.
Another more budget-friendly option is the colorful boutique hotel Flora.
Shopping
Just a stone’s throw from both Hotel Pigalle and Hotel Flora are some of Gothenburg’s best shopping areas. An excellent first stop is the popular home furnishing store Artilleriet, where time just flies by. With a select and eclectic range of homeware, furniture and products from around the world, this huge store is perfect whether you’re a design freak or just enjoy a unique shop experience.
Next door is Artilleriet’s sister store, The Kitchen, where you can browse among stylish handicraft-based kitchen ware. Ideal if you don’t have much spare luggage space, but still want to take home a souvenir.
If fashion is more your shopping thing, Grandpa won’t disappoint, offering a carefully selected range of fashion and lifestyle, along with a great atmosphere and knowledgeable staff. Also stop in at the courtyard café da Matteo for a great cup of coffee before moving on.
Concept store Vallgatan 12 is also worth a visit if you’re into fashion. With an area of 1,000 square meters, you’ll find fashions here for men and women, as well as art and home furnishings. For an extra conscious choice, pop into second-hand store Humana just around the corner: well assorted, high quality, and something for every wardrobe.
Are you a hopeless perfume collector? Then visit the aromatic COW Parfymeri at your own risk. A unique range of beauty and fragrance products, with staff who really know their stuff.
Refreshments
After an intensive afternoon of retail, it’s a good idea to rest your feet a while. Champagnebaren is a wonderful, slightly hidden watering hole with a sparkling drinks menu and delicious snacks – the perfect place to recharge your batteries for the evening’s activities.
Sun shining? If so, a lovely, creamy, homemade gelato at Gelaterian will cool you down and perk you up.
Dinner
To milk every drop out of the Inom Vallgraven neighborhood, and also manage the walk back to your hotel later, dinner at the French- and sea-inspired Bar Bulot is to be recommended. Enjoy delicious West Coast produce, prepared and served in playful, innovative ways.
Or if you’re looking for more of a blowout, head instead for Gothenburg’s best burgers at The Barn. And don’t miss their irresistible sweet potato fries!
Saturday
Discover the city’s art scene
After a good night’s sleep and an unrushed hotel breakfast, a new day awaits in this charming city, and of course no visit is complete without a stroll along Gothenburg’s famous Avenue. From this grand street you can get to the Röhsska Museum, boasting everything from art and design to fashion from across Europe, Japan and China. Follow The Avenue all the way to Götaplatsen at the top, and you’ll see the city’s iconic statue of Poseidon, as well as Göteborgs Konsthall art hall and Gothenburg Museum of Art.
Lunch
Just a couple of blocks from Götaplatsen is the trendy café Viktors Kaffe, serving light lunches and crumbly croissants, but especially excellent coffee. If the weather’s hot a coffee tonic is the trendy choice, a cooling coffee drink made from cold-brewed coffee, tonic water and ice.
Aperitivo
Saturday night in Gothenburg is best kicked off at one of the city’s atmospheric bars. A well-made cocktail at Familjen is a good choice if you fancy a nice quencher. If you’re looking for an exciting wine list and delicious cheeses, head to Björns Bar wine bar instead.
Dinner
Gothenburg’s most talked-about restaurant right now can be found at Vasa Kyrkogata 1. Bar La Lune, originally a little wine bar, has now grown into a full restaurant – without losing its homely buzz and spontaneous atmosphere. On the menu are frequently shifting and innovative snack dishes, mains and delightful desserts. If you want to spend the evening nearby, sister bar Angeli is right next door.
Another small, delightfully atmospheric restaurant is Bord 27. Despite the top-tier food and drink, this is a charming and unpretentious place, with dishes inspired by the whole world.
Sunday
Morning
A Sunday in Gothenburg is best spent strolling around the lovely old ‘county governor’s houses’ in the Haga neighborhood – beautiful wooden houses from 1870 and later. Breakfast at the little café Gerd, then treat yourself to a relaxing morning spa at Hagabadet.
Lunch
Before finishing off your weekend break, it’s worth walking up to Benne Pastabar on Skanstorget for a filling lunch. Fresh homemade pasta at reasonable prices – the perfect end to a perfect weekend.
